California Quail, the State Bird: Identification

The California Quail (Callipepla californica) is one of six species of quail found in the United States. It grows to about 10 inches in length, has an approximate 14 inch wingspan, and has several identifying characteristics. The male has a black throat, white markings on its head, a dark brown crown, and a black, curled plume on its forehead, consisting of several feathers. It is mainly gray, brown, and tan overall. The female bird is similar, but she lacks the black, white, and dark brown on the head, and has a small, dull plume. California Quail can be heard calling "put way doo," "pit-pit," and "waaay."
