HAYFORK – Despite having several highlight reel plays on both offense and defense, the Butte Valley Bulldogs couldn’t match the Hayfork Timberjacks’ offensive juggernaut on Wednesday night. The T-Jacks put up 46 points to win the NSCIF Division-VI 8-man football championship, 46-6. The victory also extended Hayfork’s winning streak to 23 games, one of the longest in the nation.
The Bulldogs finished the season second in the North Section with a 10-2 record—both losses coming at the hands of the Timberjacks.
It was no secret to Butte Valley who they had to stop—Scott Harrison. It didn’t happen.
On the second play from scrimmage, Harrison ripped off a 70-yard TD run on the frozen field. Several players, including Harrison, slipped on the play. Harrison ran for the 2-point conversion, giving the T-Jacks an 8-0 lead with less than a minute gone in the game.
On their first possession, the Bulldogs moved into Hayfork territory, but the T-jacks recovered a Butte Valley fumble and went to work from about midfield. Harrison went 40-yards for another TD, and rushed for the 2-point conversion, making it 16-0, with 7:23 on the clock.
The Bulldogs drove to the Hayfork 30-yard-line, but could go no further on their second possession, turning the ball over on downs. A little over two minutes into the second quarter, Hayfork made it 24-0 via a 25-yard Harrison TD run, and 2-point conversion.
The T-Jacks recovered another Butte Valley fumble, at the Bulldogs 40, and capitalized on the gift with a 15-yard Harrison TD jaunt. The 2-point attempt failed, but with 1:20 left in the first half it was 30-0 for Hayfork.
Hayfork got the ball back on their own 45-yard-line, after a Bulldog punt, with four seconds remaining before intermission. Perhaps fearing a incredible Bulldog second half comeback, the T-Jacks opted for a bit of treachery. The result was an incomplete pass, ending the half.
Hayfork recovered an onside kick to start the second half, and then drove 51 yards to pay dirt. This time, it was Donald Ferguson putting up six pints, on a 45-yard run. Harrison added the 2-point conversion, making it 38-0.
At that point it would have been easy for Butte Valley to roll over and play dead, give up another TD, go to a running clock, get on the bus and go home. But, that’s just not Bulldogs football. Instead, the Dogs drove 80 yards for a touchdown, with Nan Perez going the final 10 yards to the end zone. The 2-point try came up short, but Butte Valley was on the board, 38-6, with 4:34 left in the third quarter.
About four and a half minutes into the final frame, Harrison went 34 yards for his fifth TD. Ferguson ran for two points, making the final score 46-6.
Hey Dogs, I want you to know that I really enjoyed covering your games this season, especially your playoff run. And, I appreciate your never say die attitude. Though you didn’t beat Hayfork, it was clear that you continued to fight and believed you could pull off an amazing comeback. That mindset will help you achieve where it counts the most—life.
