Ethiopia, in East Africa, has diverse geographical features, characterised by a conglomeration of equally diverse ecosystems and climate variations. The result is spectacular.

Ecosystem and Climate Diversity in Ethiopia

According to Frances Linzee Gordon and Jean-Bernard Carillet, authors of Lonely Planet's Ethiopia & Eritrea guidebook, "eight major habitats" have been identified, namely: "Desert & Semidesert Scrubland, Small-leaved Deciduous Forest, Broad-leaved Deciduous Forest, Moist Evergreen Forest, Lowland Semi-Evergreen Forest, Dry Evergreen Montane Forest & Grassland, Afro-Alpine Vegetation and Wetlands."

As for the climate, the highlands tend to be cool, like in Addis Ababa, the capital, with average daytime temperatures settling-in at 16°C, then down to single numbers at night, with hailstorms a common occurrence during the rainy season, which for this year, commenced early in January, instead of June, and stretched on and on till mid-October, making it one of the wettest and longest.
