Miami, Florida is not known as a place where singer-songwriters rule the airwaves and concert halls. In fact, in a land where trendy dance clubs are king, it would take a rare artist of that genre of music to make an indelible impression.
Well, Miami got that artist recently when David Gray came to town on April 14 and delivered a stunning two-hour plus concert at the lovely Fillmore Theatre. Interestingly, while the concert was stunning for all, it was not surprising for the British singer’s modest but dedicated fan base who showed up to hear the man play The Magic City for the first time ever.
Brief History of David Gray
Gray has built his reputation as a great performer on the strength of his solid songwriting. His first album, A Century Ends, was released all the way back in 1993 and he has been releasing a new album every three years or so ever since. His biggest success, however, came in 1999 when the hit single “Babylon” made his White Ladder album a must listen.
So while most people fondly remember those White Ladder songs, what made Gray’s stop in Miami so memorable was his willingness to play tracks from every one of his past albums including plenty of stuff from his latest cd, the underrated Draw the Line.
Concert Opening Includes Rocking Version of "Now and Always"
Gray and his four-piece band had the audience in their hands from the get-go at Wednesday’s concert with a fantastic quintet of songs. “Fugitive,” the first single from the new album, was a great opener with its up-tempo pace and Gray’s excellent singing of the lyrics “When will you realize my friend/ Lord in the end now you can’t take it with/ Gotta live.”
That was quickly followed up with another song that showed Gray’s wide vocal range. “First Chance,” another Draw the Line track, sparkled better live than the recorded version because of the extra muscle the band gave it. Next came solid performances of the mellow “Sail Away,” the ultra-catchy “World To Me” and the piano-driven “Jackdaw.”
The concert hit a high point, however, with Gray and his band’s rocking performance of “Now and Always” which featured the singer on harmonica and his band extending the song with some impressive playing.
