FIFA World Cup 2022

Qatar is in the news because FIFA, soccer’s world governing body, has awarded the country the World Cup in 2022. Qatar has guaranteed to build enough air-conditioned stadia for the event to be staged successfully. These will be needed because outside temperatures in June and July rise to between 45 and 50 degrees Centigrade.

Country Facts

The country is 4,416 square miles in size, slightly larger than Jamaica and Lebanon. According to the IMF the nation’s GDP was $84 billion in 2009. Qatar is on the Persian Gulf facing Iran and its neighbours are Bahrain, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Other countries in the area include Kuwait, Yemen, and Oman.

No Income Tax

As the mondaq.com website states there is no income tax in Qatar - the government makes so much from oil revenues that the roads and the hospitals are built as and when they are needed. There are 200,000 Qataris and ten times as many "foreigners". As the ExpatFocus.com website says four of the hospitals run by the Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC) in Doha are free to all Qataris, while everyone else pays 15% of the actual cost of the treatment. No-one has to pay for emergency surgery or care.
